Many humans believe that a Soul looks like a centipede, or a parasite. While the long, flexible body might be similar, that's about it. Souls are often described as "living ribbons", twisting and rippling through the air. Their color doesn't seem natural, a glowing silvery white. Sometimes a Soul appears to be more of a ball of glowing light than the solid form they truly are. Souls are light, easily able to be picked up with two human hands. They have thin, feathery attachments in a pale silver color. These attachments might look soft, but they have the ability to slice through basically anything, including themselves. This is the Soul's only defense mechanism really, and they only use it to shred themselves when a Host attempts to take a Soul out of their body. It might seem like a terrible thing, but Souls cannot live out in the open for more than a short amount of time.
But that silvery form isn't what is normally seen on Earth. After being inserted into a human's body, there are only two physical things that can be used to tell the difference between a human and Soul. First are their eyes. There is a thin silvery ring around the pupil, which seems to glow slightly in daylight. A flashlight can also be used; when put in a Soul's face, their eyes will reflect that light. Second, is very thin and barely noticeable scar can be found on their neck. Though Soul technology is extremely advanced, even their medicines can take away a scar from such a deep cut. The scar is smooth and basically just a small, soft bump on a Soul's neck.
Souls are supposed to be good-natured, nearly perfect beings. They described as being compassionate, patient, honest, virtuous, and full of love; all things good. Most are quite social as they like to work together in harmony and have friends. There aren't outcasts; everyone is accepted in their community. Also, no one is really deemed "strangers", as one would be in the human-ruled earth. It's perfectly fine to start chatting with someone you've never met, or help them out. This is what Souls do; they help and are kind to each other. They are against violence, except for the few Callings that might require it in a time of need. Of course, that's just the general idea of the Souls. Sometimes a Soul can stand out from the others, perhaps have ill-will or strong leftover feelings from their human Host. Which brings in another point. A Soul will absorb some of their Host's personality, habits, and preferences. Human emotions are stronger than any other Hosts the Souls have found. It's nearly impossible to get rid of such emotions, such as irritation and anger. As much as Souls might be able to control such emotions, they still surface and most are either afraid or dislike them. When it comes to habits, a Soul might inherit something of their Host's, such as biting their nails or taking fast when embarrassed. Souls will go either way with their Callings; they might take up a Calling within their human host's preference--if they like art, perhaps they'll be an artist or work in a museum. Or a Soul may find a Calling similar to theirs on a previous planet. All this depends on the Soul him/herself, and their strength.
Speaking of previous planets, as you may or may not know, Souls often keep their names from a previous planet. But just as often, they keep their human Host's name, or create one for themselves. Names from the other planets are longer and relate to that planet. For example, one of the characters in The Host is called "Burns Living Flowers", or Burns. He was from the Fire Planet. Also, Petals Open to the Moon (or Pet) was probably from the Flower Planet. If you've ever read Warriors by Erin Hunter, these names are similar to the Tribe names.
They came to Earth to experience, not to change. The Souls changed important things about Earth; medicine and air travel, but that's nearly it. Their medicine is extremely advanced, it heals instead of merely treating the symptoms as human medicine did. Because of this, most human medicine was thrown out. Air travel changed drastically as well, it can now only be described as spaceships instead of airplanes. They live out human life almost exactly how humans had, except without the hardships and horrors of the previous human-ruled world. While the humans had defined governments, the Soul's "government" isn't quite as set in stone. It's not really a government at all. There are Souls to whom others may report to, to keep information organized, and councils who make decisions about that information, but nothing huge. Rarely would a Soul have to report another for doing something deemed illegal, because there really isn't anything illegal. Besides, that's not how the Souls work. They don't do anything that would be illegal in the human world; they don't murder or steal. Basically, Souls work together as equals. There is no money that the Souls use, because there is no need. Souls simply take what they wish, but they are fair about it. They still "buy" things, but there is no money involved, and it's just to check inventory.
One big thing about the Souls is how they view what they are doing. The humans thing they're here to "conquer and kill", but really they're just experiencing and making things better. Previously, Earth had been full of murder and conspiracy, war and sickness. With the Souls in charge, it's full of happiness and peace. The Earth is beautiful, and the Souls do not believe humans deserve it, with how much horror and destruction they've brought to it.
